Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA)

Peterborough Fire Services uses "Scott AP75" with 4500 PSI air cylinders for our Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). The cylinders are made from aluminum and carbon fibre.  They feature the vibra-alert alarm when the cylinder reaches approximately 25% of its air supply. The SCBA unit also has a built in Personal Alert Safety System (PASS) when a firefighter becomes lost  and it can be manually activated by a firefighter should they need help.

The Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus consists of 4 components:

  1. Air cylinder
  2. Harness
  3. Regulator and hose
  4. Mask

It weighs about 17 kg. or 35 lbs. and provides approximately 45 minutes of breathing air.  Depending on a firefighter's heavy workload, a 45 minute SCBA air cylinder can be used up in as little as 20 minutes.
